Dental caries, gum diseases, malocclusion of teeth and oral cancers are major health problems in the State, prevalent even in the socio-economically well urban areas. Although all of these may not be life-threatening, they can cause lots of morbidity, psychological stress and its treatment is expensive. Premature loss of important oral tissues in children and increase trends of cases of Oral cancer in adults are the major concerns of the health provider. Morbidity and mortality rate resulting from these diseases can to a large extent be reduced, controlled and prevented through public education and motivation, setting up of proper infrastructure with additional manpower and mass awareness campaign programme at school levels.

Programme Components 

  1. Upgradation of Infrastructure:
  1. Renovation of poor existing infrastructure and installation of new complete Dental Equipments in 6 (Six) district hospitals will be undertaking.
  2. Procurement and installation of 1 (One) OPG Machine (Ortho Pantomogram) to detect Maxillo-Mandible Skeletal diseases in NHAK.                                
  1. Human resources:
  1. Continue the services of 31 existing Dental Surgeons on Contractual basis under NRHM during 2012-2013.
  2. Placement of 11 Dental Hygienist/ Dental Nurses will be placed in   all 11 District Hospitals

iii.    Oral Health Mobile Services :

  1. 5 (Five) Districts are proposed to be equipped with complete Mobile units for the purpose of conducting Oral Health Camps and Oral Cancer Detection Camps.
  1. School & community Oral Health Programme:
  1. Screening of school children for oro-dental problems will be under taken in 110 schools spreading in 11 districts with active involvement of NGO�s and Civil Societies. This will be carried out in closed co-ordination with unemployed Dental Surgeons and private practitioners in the State with special focus to CHC & PHC level.
  1. IEC Activities:
  1. Posters, banners, billboards, pamphlets, handouts etc. will be displayed in all the Health centres and strategic public places in all the districts. Village opinion leaders and church leaders and Ashas will be involved in this programme. Training manuals will be made available for all Health workers in the districts.
  1. Survey:
  1. Oral Disease Surveillance activities will be continued in all the Health Units wherever Dental Surgeons are placed during 2012-2013.

vii.   Training & Capacity Building:      

  1. Short term training for awareness and disease identification will be conducted for Nurses, Health workers and Ashas. Regular continue dental education programme will be conducted for Dental Surgeons to upgrade the knowledge and skills of Oral diseases identification and management of Oral Health Care delivery system.
